It was a great pleasure to photograph for the Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech, one of the most iconic hotels in Africa, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, featuring a luxury golf resort nestled into a palm oasis, surrounded by the snowcapped Atlas Mountains.

“Very flexible, professional and kind, Adrian is a delight to work with. The results were beyond what was expected!”
Majdouline Ataalah, Marketing Manager Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech
The pre-production meeting was scheduled for the day before shooting would take place. While working closely with the hotel marketing team, we walked through the property in order to prepare a thorough shooting list, which is the key to smooth photography production. The shooting list includes plans and details for all of the components of production; including scene, location and time.
The executive chef joined us in organizing the food photo-shoot, in which we planned what dishes were to be photographed with which props/background and appointed a time slot for each dish. The resort has several restaurants in various locations throughout the property, therefore it was necessary to have a well-coordinated timetable to complete our work efficiently.
The day of the shoot began with food photography, in which we were tasked with capturing the dishes in the restaurant’s atmosphere as well as a couple of fine dining close up shots. Some dishes were captured on the terrace, allowing us to utilize natural light with one strobe light used as a shadow filler. Shooting with natural light can be amazing but does come with some challenges of its own. For example, it was very hot on the terrace, and food can melt and/or wilt within a couple of minutes of exposure. While it is important to be aware of such challenges, in this situation, our teams’ thorough planning and preparation paired with an experienced executive chef and marketing director made it a breeze.
While shooting dishes within the interior of the hotel, we used 3 strobes with softboxes to shape the light exactly how we needed it and completed the indoor shooting at night to avoid disturbing any guests. The hotel’s bar, with its ambient light with colors and textures, is a playground for photographers and a perfect place to shoot fine dining and I just loved it.
The light in Morocco, particularly around the golden hours, is absolutely stunning. Quality images come as the result of studying the light and understanding how certain textures react to different lighting conditions. Coordinating your shoot at the best time in relation to the sun and it’s light is what can bring the images to a whole new level and make them stand out.
Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech has many unique features like high ceilings, artisanal furniture with Moroccan details, beautiful gardens, and exquisite views. To highlight all of these features, we lit small parts of the frame individually and later combined them into one final image using photoshop. In the end, it took approximately 2 hours to take all of the shots necessary for the final exterior image.
A big thank you to the entire team for their efforts and cooperation which made this project at the Fairmont Royal Palm Marrakech a great success!
